Design is the process that summarizes all functions and emotions implemented in a product. It is the sum of all construction details and the choice of materials, the user interface and the look and feel. But most of all, design is the subjective evaluation of the product, made by the customer. Then design becomes the sum of perceived quality, user-friendliness and the product’s ability to fulfil the customer’s needs.
In Luxo we have made a distinction between what we call good and excellent products. A product that has been well designed gives the user the correct functionality. For Luxo, this means getting the light exactly where you want it, wasting no energy. A good product also has thoughtful ergonomics built into it, such as an intuitive and easy user interface and a glare-free light. Furthermore, the product should be durable; and to become excellent the aesthetics should be desirable and honest, a concept often renowned as Scandinavian Design.
